Iran Ceasefire on “Life Support” – Just one day after starting “Project Freedom” where the U.S. military would guide commercial ships out of the Strait of Hormuz, President Trump declared that he was pausing the operation citing progress towards an agreement with Iran.  That progress seemed to be short-lived as Iran submitted their proposal to end the war on Sunday, which Trump responded to by calling it “garbage.”  Trump went on to state that the ceasefire with Iran was “on life support.”  Oil prices traded 3% higher in early trading on Monday.

Trade Court Invalidates Trump’s Global Tariffs – The U.S. Trade Court ruled that President Trump’s 10% global tariffs are not justified under trade law.  The tariffs were set to expire in July, at which point the administration plans to announce new tariffs.  A few hours after the ruling came down, Trump signed a new order imposing 10% global tariffs using a different legal method, which was also immediately challenged.

Jobs Report – Apr: 115k (Reuters Poll est. 62k) Mar: 185k

April job gains were stronger than expected, and March payrolls were revised upward, marking two consecutive months of solid labor-market growth. However, some economists have noted that recent government shutdowns and labor strikes have made the data unusually volatile, and they recommend using a three-month average to gauge underlying labor-market strength. The current three-month payroll average is 48,000, down from more than 70,000 at this time last year.

Mango Mania – While previously banned from U.S. stores due to their inability to endure a hot-water treatment to kill pests, Indian mangoes have surged in popularity in recent years.  Once a new technique involving gamma radiation was developed to treat the sensitive Indian Mango, the ban was lifted and demand grew.  Costco reports that prices for Indian mangos are now five times as high as that of a regular mango and similar to the cost of a lobster tail.
