Core CPI – Aug: 0.3% (Reuters Poll est. 0.3%) Jul: 0.3%

The monthly increase in core inflation was in-line with analyst forecasts.  On a year-over-year basis, core inflation was up 3.1%.  Overall CPI was higher than the core CPI number with overall prices up 0.4% versus the previous month when including food and energy.  Tomato prices were up 4.5% month-over-month for the biggest increase since January 2020.  Beef and coffee prices surged as well and are up over 10% from a year ago.

Employment Level Reduced – The annual benchmark revision to the US payrolls benchmark showed that the U.S. economy likely created 911,000 fewer jobs than previously estimated in the twelve months through March 2025.  This equals 76,000 fewer jobs per month and suggest that the labor market has been weakening for longer than previously reported.  Economists had expected the revision to be approximately 700,000 fewer jobs.

Unemployment Claims – The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits last week rose to 263,000, representing the highest level in nearly four years.

Hollywood Loves Hollywood – New television show “The Studio” set a record for most Emmys won for a comedy series in a single season this weekend.  The show received 13 Emmys including Best Comedy Series, Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and Best Writing.
