Venezuelan President Removed From Power – Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were captured on Saturday by the U.S. military and transported to a federal jail in New York. Both are awaiting trial for narcoterrorism charges. While initially critical of the operation, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez stated on Sunday that the country should seek “balanced and respectful” relations between her country and the United States. Prices for many oil-related and defense stocks surged after the operation and the price of brent crude oil increased slightly as of Monday morning.

Fed Minutes – Recently released meeting minutes show division amongst Federal Open Market Committee members. Even several of those that supported the rate cut noted that “the decision was finely balanced.” Many of those opposed to the cut suggested they would prefer to wait to set an interest rate path until they were able to review the upcoming wave of labor market and inflation data that was delayed due to the government shutdown. The market is currently anticipating two additional 25 basis point interest rate cuts in 2026.

Money is Worthless - The U.S. Mint has minted its last penny citing the high cost to produce them. In its most recent report, they noted that each penny costs 3.69 cents to make. While the estimated 250 billion pennies currently in circulation will remain legal tender, it is estimated that the circulation will slow significantly as nearly two-thirds of the Federal Reserve coin facilities will stop taking or distributing pennies. Some believe that nickels may be the next to go with the cost of producing a nickel at greater than 13 cents.
