Economic Data

Jobs Report November: 199,000 (Reuters Poll est. 180,000), October: 150,000

The end of several auto worker strikes during the month added approximately 30,000 jobs back to the payrolls.  The unemployment rate unexpectedly dropped from 3.9% to 3.7%.  Average hourly earnings increased 4.0% year-over-year, slightly lower than the 4.1% reported last month.  This is the 4th consecutive decline in the rate of change for annual average hourly earnings.

Job Openings October: 8.7M (Reuters Poll est. 9.3M), September: 9.4M

Bigger than expected drop in job openings suggests a cooling off in the job market, yet openings remain above their pre-pandemic level of 6.9M.

FDA Approves 1st Ever Crispr Drug – For the first time ever, the U.S. approved a drug utilizing Crispr technology to modify genes and treat disease.  The drug will be used to treat patients with Sickle-cell disease.  Several other drugs are currently under development using this technology to treat various diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Moody’s Lowers China’s Credit Outlook – Moody’s reduced China’s credit outlook from stable to negative citing the potential for China’s central government to assist local and regional governments with their debt loads. China’s sovereign debt still maintains A1 rating.

Prohibition Ends – Prohibition ended 90 years ago this week.  At the time Prohibition was enacted, it is estimated that the average adult American consumed just under 2 gallons of alcohol per year, below the 2.3 gallons estimated to be consumed nowadays.  Peak consumption in the U.S. occurred in 1830, where it is estimated the average adult American consumed 7 gallons of alcohol per year or 29 drinks per week.
